Christian Aid service

THE annual service of the Kirkintilloch and Lenzie Christian Aid Group will take place this Sunday (April 22).

The service will be held in St David’s Memorial Park Church at 6.30pm.

The speaker will be Kathy Galloway, who is leader of Christian Aid in Scotland.

Everyone will be very welcome at the service to hear first hand about the work of Christian Aid.

Fund-tastic success

A GROUP of fundraising sportswomen have been bowled over by the generosity of their local community.

The ladies of the Victoria Bowling Club, in Torrance, had their annual charity bingo night earlier this year - raising an incredible £1,400 for cancer research.

A club spokesperson said: “We would like to thank all who took part in this fantastically important cause, particularly the ladies not pictured who gave their time and donations - Anne Purdie, Margaret Wilson, Ella Buchanan and Pat McKay.

“A special thanks also to Jean O’Neil who kept the masses watered at the bar, and of course Eric Cribbes our entertaining club secretary and star bingo caller for giving his free time to the cause.”

Helping hand for over 65s

VULNERABLE people in North Lanarkshire can receive help with small repairs and household tasks.

The local authority’s Care and Repair Service is offering help to anyone aged over 65 or with a disability.

The venture is being funded jointly by the council and NHS Lanarkshire and delivered by the Link Group in association with Horizon Housing Association.

For people aged 65 and over, or those with a disability, the service provides qualified tradesmen to carry out internal joinery, plumbing and electrical work to their home.

There is a small charge of £10 plus VAT and the householder must cover the cost of any materials.

As part of the service a team of volunteers will carry out general tasks such as fitting batteries to smoke detectors, assembling flat pack units, changing light bulbs, wiring plugs and changing fuses.

This aspect of the service is free of charge, although the tenant or home owner pays the cost of any materials.

You can contact the North Lanarkshire Care and Repair Service on 0800 048 2882 or by e-mail at northlan@care-and-repair.org.

The fundraising event takes place between 10am-12noon.

There will be stalls selling home-baking, bedding plants and cards.
