Ladies meet at SWRI

President Elinor Oswald welcomed members and friends to the February meeting of SWRI Milton of Campsie, when a Beetle Drive was held. It was an excellent night and the winner was Maud Young.

The competition for 'a vegetable animal' was won by Elizabeth Barbour and second was Elinor Oswald. The tray bake competition was won by Chrissie Collins.

It is with deepest sympathy the club announces the passing of Ellen Muirhead, aged 96.

She was an honorary and founder member of the Milton of Campsie Rural.

Mrs Muirhead was an active member and won many competitions with her baking and jam-making.

When her sight failed, her daughter Betty still brought her along to the meetings.

Her smile and warmth filled the hall and she will be missed by all.

Our thoughts are with her family.

The ladies had an excellent night recently at the King's Theatre when the Orpheus Club presented Fiddler on the Roof.

The next meeting will be held in Milton of Campsie Village Hall tonight (Wednesday) at 7.30pm.

There will be a group meeting, then neighbouring institutes will join for 'A Night at the Flicks'. Janet McBain from Scottish Screen Archives will be the guest speaker. Please take a black and white photograph for this month's competition.

A warm welcome is extended to all members and friends.

Bette's boost for charity

KIRKINTILLOCH lady Bette Cowie – a member of Westermains Bowling Club – celebrated her 90th birthday in style recently.

Bette is still playing both indoor and outdoor bowls and also attends a weekly keep fit class.

Her sister Agnes organised a dinner for family and friends at the Eagle Lodge recently.

Bette also had a party for all her bowling friends from Westermains Bowling Club.

Kind-hearted Bette did not want any gifts and so a collection was made for Epilepsy Scotland – raising an amazing 517.50p.

Spread your wings at ATC

A HIGH-flying organisation covering Twechar, Kirkintilloch, Birdston, Milton of Campsie, Lennoxtown and Lenzie is looking for new recruits.

Cumbernauld Air Training Corps – 2496 Squadron – is based at the TA Centre, Glencryan Road, Cumber-nauld, next to the bus depot.

Cumbernauld Air Cadets is part of a national youth organisation for young people aged 13-20, sponsored by the Royal Air Force.

The organisation is designed to promote an interest in aviation among young people, where flying and gliding at no cost to the individual is key to the organisation's ethos.

Cadets develop citizenship skills through working with charities, community groups and providing support for community events, etc. The air cadets also foster a spirit of adventure through young people taking part in training courses and attending weekends, learning to map-read and abseil, developing leadership skills and taking part in hillwalking activities, etc.

Young people can also gain community awards, first aid skills, further educational qualifications and take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

They have the opportunity to attend annual camps for work experience in a variety of trades and learn about what other organisations do.

Cadets are given a range of responsibilities to help with their personal development through classification badges and being promoted to positions of authority. Cadets can further gain from leadership training and courses involving transferable skills.

Young people and adult staff volunteers considering joining will be made welcome. The squadron meets on Mondays and Thursdays from 7.30 - 9.30pm.

Call 01236 451070 (Monday and Thursday evenings only) or visit www. aircadets.org
