A WONDERFUL wheelchair dancer has taken to the stage of one of Glasgow’s most prestigious theatres.
Kirsty Soutar (17) performed alongside professional dancers at the Theatre Royal in the ‘Go Dance 12’ event earlier this year.
The Lenzie Academy S5 pupil has cerebral palsy - a result of a childhood heart problem - but hasn’t let her condition stop her love of dance.
When she was younger Kirsty was an enthusiastic member of Torrance Dance School, run by Claire and Catherine Bonar, for several years.
She achieved several mainstream exam medals and was well-known for her appearances in shows - when her wheelchair could be heard rumbling onto stage before curtain-up.
The teenager has been a member of the ‘Make Music Move’ Glasgow dance group, who run classes for dancers both with and without disabilities, for two years.
The group, operated by the Paragon organisation at Glasgow’s Tramway, have previously performed at the Dundee Rep theatre, but the show at the Theatre Royal was Kirsty’s biggest to date.
She performed a duet, both in and out of her wheelchair, with a dancer from the Scottish Dance Theatre before taking part in a group performance.
Mum Alice said: “Kirsty loves her dancing and is very grateful to her Scottish Dance Theatre dance partners and Paragon music group for helping her to continue developing her dance skills, and to have these wonderful opportunities which she never dreamed she could have.
“Kirsty has a very positive attitude to dealing with being a disabled teenager and doesn’t let anything hold her back. She is about to be presented with her Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
“She wants people to know about Make Music Move and to realise that there are lots of great things out there that disabled people can take part in.”
