Jack Crawford 10k is off and running!
RUNNERS warm up for the new season with a bracing run in Bishopbriggs.
Kirkintilloch Olympians athletes were outstanding in the Jack Crawford Springburn Cup 10K.
In the event held on Sunday, February 28, they had a worthy winner in Stuart Kerr, whose time of 33 minutes, nine seconds was well outside the course record of 29.39.
However, on a day when the heavy underfoot conditions ensured times would never be super fast, Stuart showed all his experience to claim victory.
He sat off younger athlete Daniel Bradford, who hails from the North East of England but runs for Glasgow University, until the last three kilometres when he eased away and opened up a 19 second gap.
Joe McKnight, of Garscube Harriers, finished third, a further 25 seconds behind.
Stuart was well supported by two junior members of the Kirkintilloch club, Adam Peters and Scott Lawrie, as they easily won the team race from Garscube Harriers, followed by East Kilbride then Springburn Harriers.
The host club also won the veterans' team race.
In the ladies event, Jo Zakrzewski, of Dumfries Running Club, won in a personal best time of 38.29, from Alison Winship of Garscube Harriers. Garscube, however, won the ladies team race.
The Springburn Cup had been due to be held in January but was called off due to the icy conditions, which were extreme to say the least.
The postponement resulted in a drop of entries of at least 100, but it is planned to return to January in 2011.
On the upside, there was an increase in the number of juniors, aged 17-20, who competed. Most 10k races struggle to attract two or three juniors, but with five finishing in the top 20, it is hoped that the future of Scottish athletics is on the up.
Springburn Harriers' membership is now quickly approaching 100, equally split between men and women.
However, the club are constantly looking for new members, aged 16 and over.
For those ladies hoping to take part the women's 10k in May, the club invites you to go along and train with like-minded runners.
So go along, try Springburn Harriers and find out just how much more there is to the sport than running one of the 10k events.
Likewise for the men, as well as the men's health 10k, there are races every week.
The club meets every Tuesday and Thursday at Huntershill Recreation at 7.10pm. Both new and past members are welcome.
Springburn Harriers' Annual General Meeting is on Wednesday, March 31 at 7.30pm.
