Let there be light in Bishopbriggs – procession is a perfect start to 2013

HAPPY residents from across Bishopbriggs took the chance to see out 2012 and welcome in the New Year with a torchlight procession to the front of Bishopbriggs Library.

The Hogmanay event, which is organised each year by Bishopbriggs Churches Together and Bishopbriggs Community Council, had the biggest attendance ever with more than 50 adults and families turning up to celebrate the year past and welcome the coming one.

People attending were given the opportunity to carry lit torches which were used to light a special beacon set up in front of Bishopbriggs Library.

The event, which has been held since 1999, was extended last year when the beacon – which is lit by Bishopbriggs Community Council – was used as part of the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations.

Dominic Notarangelo, chairman of Bishopbriggs Community Council, said: “The number of people attending shows how popular this annual event has become and the civic space in front of the library shows why it is important for a community to have somewhere to come together and meet.”

Afterwards, people enjoyed a warm cuppa in Cadder Hall and a family ceilidh in Kenmure Church Hall, with more than 60 people getting into the spirit of the season.
