Roundabout way of getting firms to make communities look nicer!

IF you are interested in ‘adopting’ a roundabout you will have to act quick, with the closing date for bids drawing near.

The unusual idea was part of a scheme launched by East Dunbartonshire Council last year.

Businesses can advertise on roundabouts, as well as gateway features, as part of the civic pride initiative. In return they are required to cover the cost of upgrades and maintenance.

The closing date for interested businesses to apply is Monday, January 30.

Councillor Billy Hendry, convener of the development and infrastructure committee, said there have been a number of inquiries.

He said: “As part of the council’s civic pride initiative, local businesses are being given the opportunity to install an agreed promotional feature or sign on roundabouts and gateway features in return for these businesses funding the roundabout’s upgrade and maintenance for an agreed period of time.

“The scheme aims to increase local identity and pride of place by enhancing the appearance of key gateway features, including roundabouts, in conjunction with local businesses.

“A number of suitable roundabouts have been identified, although the council is happy to discuss other locations.”

Roundabouts included in the scheme include the A803 at Strathkelvin Retail Park, the roundabout at Kings Meadow/Princes Gate, Bishopbriggs, and the roundabout at Townhead/Initiative Road, Kirkintilloch (above).
