Kirkintilloch Speakers Club

MEMBERS continued to have success at the Annual Area Speaking Competitions of the ASC (Association of Speakers Clubs).

Ron Kerr won the Evaluation Contest and Ian Arnott was runner-up in the Speaking Competition. Both now go forward to the district competitions being held in Bathgate.

Members of the club were asked recently to act as chairman and judges for the West of Scotland Debating Competition of the ASC. The team was led by Ron Kerr who took the role of chief judge and organised the proceedings.

Meanwhile, speakers club stalwart Jackie Stewart has received an award for outstanding contribution to the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED).

Jackie is pictured receiving a medal of appreciation from IED president, Sir George Cox.

Mr Stewart has been regional co-ordinator for Scotland for over 15 years. He became an associate of the institution in 1967, transferring to member in 1976 and fellow in 1992.

His career in engineering design has been extensive and wide ranging, including projects such as oil refinery, services for chemical plants, schools and hospitals, special purpose machinery and transducers, as well as running his own design consultancy advising small companies on developing design through a scheme run by the DTI.

Mr Stewart has been recognised for managing such a large branch since 1995 – with a challenging geographical spread.

A spokesperson said: “Jackie has always been on hand to guide and advise members in the area.“

Mr Stewart was the first person to arrange an honour for Dr John Brown through the IED – the former MD of John Brown’s Shipyard and designer of the Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth and the QE 2. He helped to secure a knighthood for him at the age of 98.

Mr Stewart is past president of Kirkintilloch Speakers Club.

The club meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month in Lenzie Golf Club at 7.30pm.Visitors are most welcome. Contact J. Stewart for further details on 07971 478605.
