Richard’s a reel hit at Celtic Connections

A MUSICIAN’S musician with more than a passing interest in traditional reels and jigs, Richard Thompson delivered one of the standout gigs at this year’s Celtic Connections Festival on Tuesday night in Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

Thompson is a unique talent. His guitar playing is in a league of its own and the same goes for his songwriting.

Many of his songs have a distinct folkie feel to them, - due to the melodies, Thompson’s vocal style and the subject matter - but this was no night at the folk club.

Backed by an excellent band, Thompson kicked off his first set with The Money Shuffle, the rocking opening track on his latest CD - Dream Attic.

Thompson’s rapport with the audience was in evidence right from the start when he announced they would be playing material from Dream Attic in the first half and his ‘greatest hits’ with a small ‘h’ in the second.

The plan worked well and the audience of devoted fans gave the beret-wearing Thompson and his band a deserved standing ovation at the end of the show.

Standout songs on a night packed full of highlights were Tear Stained Letter and Wall of Death.
