FROM Twechar to Disneyland, a high-flying cheerleading squad have been invited back to the most prestigious tournament in their sport after being crowned the 21st best team in the world.

The 15-strong team of girls from JC PomPoms, who train up to six nights a week at Twechar Healthy Living Centre, reached the finals of the World Cheerleading Championships at Disneyland in Orlando.

The invitation-only, glamour event took place at the Epcot Centre – famous for hosting the teen cheerleading film ‘Bring It On’.

Now the girls have been invited back for the 2012 World Cheerleading Championships.

JC PomPoms dancer Joanne McEvoy (16), a pupil at St Ninian’s High in Kirkintilloch, said: “It was a great experience and we were all really pleased at getting to the finals as we’re all aged between 15 and 20, whereas a lot of the American teams are all in their 20s.

“It was great getting to see all the American teams. They’re really professional, but for all that professionalism they’re really friendly.

“We spoke to a lot of them and some of the girls added them as friends on Facebook.”

JC Pompoms secured their place at the prestigious event in the Sunshine State when they triumphed in the UK National Cheerleading Competition at the SECC last April.

The squad, who based their cheers at the championships around the theme of Las Vegas where they performed in showgirl-type dance costumes, even went as far as bringing a choreographer over from America before the trip to make sure their routine was completely up to scratch.

Joanne said: “I can’t wait for next year’s tournament. It’ll be great having already had the experience of this year’s competition.”
