THERE were no guns, but a few roses as a Kirkintilloch couple enjoyed a wedding with a difference.
Jim Weir and Jill Willox got hitched in an unconventional ceremony at Kirkintilloch Miners’ Welfare Club last month – with the groom dressed as Slash from American rock band Guns ‘n’ Roses.
Funds were raised on the day for a great cause. Jim (37) was born with a congenital heart defect and had surgery at London’s Great Ormond Street when he was only months old.
Since then he has had several operations, including a number at Yorkhill Hospital – the organisation he decided to dedicate his wedding to.
Guests were asked to donate cash instead of buying a present, while charity buckets were placed at the bar.
At the end of the happy day a massive £743.09 was raised for Yorkhill Children’s Foundation.
And the husband-to-be’s unusual attire – which included leather trousers and a top hat – made sure it was a day that nobody would ever forget.
Jim, who still needs to take drugs for his heart condition and who was in hospital for his latest operation just three years ago, told the Herald: “I always said that if I got married I wasn’t going to wear a boring suit or tie.
“When I said to Jill I wanted to dress like Slash she unexpectedly agreed so I couldn’t back out.”
He added: “When I heard how much we raised I was amazed. We only had around 50 to the wedding so it shows just how generous everybody was.”
