RESIDENTS are calling for Bishopbriggs to have its own 'Initiative'.

Bishopbriggs Community Council would like to see the town emulate the success stories of Kirkintilloch's Initiative and Lennoxtown Initiative – both of which have encouraged economic development in their communities.
The community council believes a Bishopbriggs Initiative would help regenerate the town socially and economically.

It has not yet been suggested who would partner the scheme or where funding would come from.

Bishopbriggs Community Council chair
person, Dominic Notarangelo, said: "We are quite excited about the prospect of this idea.

"Given the future and imminent development of Bishopbriggs Cross, we think there should be an 'Initiative' formed to make sure that it is completed in the right way.

"It is an opportunity to get something really good and useful created in the town.

"Local people would be consulted on the plans, which would be an important aspect."

He added: "The community council plan to discuss this further and make some inquiries before making our case."

Proposals for a Bishopbriggs Initiative have been welcomed by the local community.

One resident told the Herald: "With all the work that is being proposed for the town centre, this would be a kick-start and it would give it a foundation.

"Kirkintilloch and Lennoxtown have their own 'Initiatives' and there is a lot of work going on in these areas helping them to flourish.
"This is something that could really benefit the town."

Bishopbriggs North and Torrance councillor Billy Hendry, convener of the development and environment committee, said any proposals would be considered.

He added: "Any suggestion of this type must be looked at seriously, however, any such proposal will have to have a robust business case and from experience there have to be major partners involved who can inject money into the scheme.

"This is, at this stage, obviously nothing more than an idea, but I will be considering its merits."
