A LONG-AWAITED skatepark is finally getting underway this week.

Work begins on the ambitious project, spearheaded by Kirkintilloch Skatepark Initiative (KSI), this week at Luggie Park.

The £500,000 project has been in the pipeline for a number of years.

KSI project co-ordinator Susan Murray said: "The contractors will go on site at some point this week.

"If no unforeseen problems come up, the skatepark will be finished by the beginning of September."

Ahead of work starting, councillors gave the go-ahead for redrawn lease documents for the park to be completed.

Plans for the park had to be changed following the discovery of a gas main near the site.
