A BRAVE mum is set to take part in a gruelling Peruvian trek in memory of her son.
Fifteen-year-old Shaun McBride, from Bishopbriggs, was taken to hospital in May 2006 after falling ill with a headache.
He was diagnosed as having a brain tumour and died just weeks before his 16th birthday.
Shaun's death devastated parents Wendy and Frank, big sister Katy and the entire community.
Now, two years after the Bishopbriggs High School pupil's death, Wendy is to travel to South America in a bid to raise thousands of pounds for a brain tumour charity.
Joining her on the fundraising trek will be work colleague Evelyn Docherty.
Together they will take on the 88km Inca Trail, which will see them walk for up to 10 hours a day to reach the famous 'lost city' of Machu Picchu.
Wendy said: "Shaun's death just devastated us and we still miss him dreadfully.
"He was such a bright cheery wee boy and he had his whole life ahead of him.
"He was just about to take his standard grades and wanted to go on to study aerodynamics and join the RAF.
"We got him flying lessons for his birthday, but he never got the chance to take them."
Wendy and her family decided to set up a fund in Shaun's name to raise money for the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust.
The trust funds research into adult and child brain tumours and provides support for patients and their carers.
Wendy said: "We started off saying we'd be delighted to raise £6,000, but at the moment we have raised around £25,000."
The adventurous duo left on Friday to start the trek and will return home 10 days time.
Wendy said: "I'd like to thank all the local people, friends and family for their support and sponsorship so far. They've all been tremendous."
