PLANS for a new graveyard are being discussed with ministers, priests and residents.

Kirkintilloch's Old Aisle Cemetery will be full in less than four years.

A number of potential sites for a new cemetery in the Kirkintilloch area have been investigated, but the council's preferred option is to extend Cadder Cemetery, in Bishopbriggs.

Earlier this month, councillors were asked to approve the plans, but Lenzie and Kirkintilloch South councillor Gillian Renwick called for consultation with local religious and community groups before a final decision is taken.

The council is to launch a consultation exercise this month.

However, Councillor Renwick is holding her own consultation on the proposals.

She said: "People feel very strongly about this and it's important that their views are heard.

"Some have said they think it's absurd not to have new cemetery in Kirkintilloch.

"Another thing that has been raised is the possibility of developing a crematorium as well as a new cemetery.

"When it comes down to money, the cost of a new cemetery in Kirkintilloch and extending the one at Cadder are very similar."

Fields near Gartconner Primary, on Waterside Road, have been identified as the most practical site for a new cemetery.
