COMPLAINTS about bogus workmen preying on people in East Dunbartonshire are being received DAILY.

Trading Standards officers have warned pensioners to be on their guard against rogue traders and conmen.

The problem was highlighted at a recent meeting of Kirkintilloch and District Seniors' Forum.

A Trading Standards officer told members about a resident who raised concerns when men demanded £5,000 for mono-blocking work at his home in Bishopbriggs.

A spokesperson for East Dunbartonshire Council Trading Standards service said: "It is extremely important that you ask traders for all information in writing, as reputable traders should not have a problem with this request.

"You should not allow yourself to be badgered into paying for anything in cash, especially not until the job is complete."

Sergeant Donald Leitch, crime prevention officer at Kirkintilloch police office, said: "We would urge anyone with information on those carrying out this kind of crime, or who sees anything suspicious, to report it to the police as soon as possible."

To contact Trading Standards call 0141 761 4897. To contact Kirkintilloch police office call 0141 532 4400.
