Top TV cop show inspires pupils
PUPILS at an East Dunbartonshire school are adopting 'CSI' style forensic techniques in science lessons.
Around 20 S1/2 pupils at St Ninian's High School are taking part in CSI St Ninian's - a crime themed extra curricular project aimed at developing their science and investigation skills.
A staged murder crime scene was set up in the school at the start of term and over the year the group has been using physics, chemistry, biology, maths, IT and teamwork to gather evidence and carry out techniques such as fingerprinting to solve the 'who done it'.
Chemistry teacher Claire Wassell said: "The pupils love the project.
"They all watch programmes such as CSI on TV, so it's really bringing science to life for them. The idea came from a project last year called 'Who Stole the S1 Exam'. The pupils enjoyed it so much they asked if they could solve a murder this year."
She added: "With the help of S6 pupils, a murder crime scene was set up and evidence planted.
"Over the year, the group has been collecting evidence and taking photographs.
"They have carried out blood typing, DNA testing, chromatography and different types of fingerprinting.
"We've also used digital microscopes for hair analysis and fibre analysis."
The innovative scheme has seen St Ninian's High School nominated for a prize at the Scottish Education Awards, to be held in the City Halls, in Glasgow, in June.
