Ambitious plans for Tom Johnston House unveiled by developers

Plans to turn East Dunbartonshire Council’s former headquarters into a new shopping development are in the pipeline.

The scheme for Tom Johnston House, in Kirkintilloch, and a neighbouring site currently containing industrial buildings, was unveiled recently by Sim Property.

The company held a consultation event at Kirkintilloch Leisure Centre last week to gauge local opinion.

Their plan is for “a major mixed use development, including a large foodstore, car parking, landscaping, petrol filling station, restaurant/drive thru’, business/general industrial units and day nursery”.

But no formal planning application has yet been made, with any eventual sale being reliant upon consent being obtained.

Thomas Glen, the council’s director of development and regeneration, said: “The council has entered into a development agreement with Sim Property who are taking forward a development proposal for the combined site.

“At this stage no sale of the Tom Johnston House site has been concluded and this would be subject to the securing of planning consent and if successful any subsequent marketing exercise.”
