A total of 521 applications for welfare assistance were made in East Dunbartonshire in the last quarter, according to a recent report.
The Scottish Welfare Fund Statistics show that between July and September 2014, applications made to the fund increased by 59 per cent compared to the same period in 2013.
Cabinet secretary for social justice Alex Neil said: “That anyone should live in poverty in a wealthy country is completely unacceptable and we’ll continue to tackle poverty to create a fairer society. The fund is a lifeline for people to buy the everyday items or cover basic living costs that so many of us take for granted. 1,130 households in East Dunbartonshire have now been helped by the Scottish Welfare Fund in its first 18 months.”
