BIG-hearted locals have helped a man with learning difficulties get back in the saddle after a gang of youths attacked him and stole his bike.

The Herald reported earlier this month how Colin Cairns (39) spent three hours searching for his bike after he was accosted by a gang while cycling in the Glen in Moodiesburn.

Colin’s neighbours Lynn Costello and Jackie Fleming were so outraged about what happened that they posted about the theft on Facebook and suggested starting a collection.

Within five hours the pair had received enough donations from Moodiesburn residents to buy the devoted cyclist a new state-of-the-art mountain bike.

Lynn (31) said: “I was disgusted that people could do that to Colin.

“I am absolutely astonished at the generosity of people in Moodiesburn, it just shows not everybody is bad.

“I’d like to thank everyone for helping out.”

Jackie (49) said: “I was shocked when I found out what had happened to Colin. Everyone knows him.

“I would like to thank everyone who contributed and helped get Colin a new bike. Everyone’s pulled together and he was delighted when he got the new bike.”

Colin’s mum, Jessie, said: “People have been so kind. Colin’s over the moon. I would like to thank everyone who contributed.”
