TERRIFIED nursery workers raised the alarm after spotting a fire at a Kirkintilloch cleaners.
Fire crews were called to the blaze at Superdry dry cleaners and laundrette, in Milton Road, at around 8pm on Monday, December 19.
Extensive damage was done to the roof of the premises, but remarkably the building remained intact and, after a day of cleaning up, workers were able to return to their jobs.
Manager Shiraz Ahmed told the Herald: “The fire service couldn’t contact me on the night, so I didn’t find out until about 7am the next morning.
“It was a shock. A lot of damage has been done, but it could have been much worse.
“We would like to thank the member of staff at Riverside Nursery who raised the alarm and the fire service for managing to contain the fire mainly to the roof.
“The main thing is that we’ve been able to keep on working - nobody is being let go.”
The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by the police and fire service.
A spokesperson for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said: “Three fire appliances from Kirkintilloch, Bishopbriggs and Springburn attended the fire.
“It took approximately three hours to extinguish the fire and special arrangements had to be taken due to the presence of asbestos in the roof cavity.”
