A new baby cafe opened in East Dunbartonshire last week, offering free support to local mothers who want to breastfeed.

Kirkintilloch Baby Café was launched last Tuesday, with all local mothers and their babies invited to come along to an opening day tea party.

The new service, based at Hillhead Parish Church is being delivered by NCT - the UK’s largest parent charity which is dedicated to helping mums and dads through the first 1,000 days of their child’s life with a range of services.

The cafe will provide an opportunity for pregnant women and new mums to receive advice and support from both NCT peer support volunteers and health professionals, as well as receiving the social support of meeting other mums and mums to be.

Belinda Phipps, Chief Executive NCT, was at the opening and said: “The first few weeks can be tough for new mums and one of the things they may need support with is breastfeeding.

“In areas where breastfeeding rates are low, it’s even more important that there is somewhere supportive and friendly for them to go.

“Most women want to breastfeed but many stop through lack of support. Research shows that 80 per cent of women who stop breastfeeding in the first few weeks would have liked to continue.

“Baby Cafés can help with questions about comfortable positions, frequent feeds, returning to work, how long to breastfeed for, introducing a bottle and starting on solid foods.”

Sandra Cairney, head of planning and health improvement at East Dunbartonshire Community Health Partnership, added: “East Dunbartonshire Community Planning Partners are aware of the many benefits for both mum and baby that breast milk provides and are committed to supporting our local mums who choose to breastfeed.

“We have worked closely with the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) to develop and improve breastfeeding support for local mums and to increase our breastfeeding rates.

“Therefore we are delighted to announce the opening of Kirkintilloch Baby Café in Hillhead Parish Church.”

The cafe is the latest in a network of over 100 across the UK and will be open every Tuesday from 2-4pm in Hillhead Parish Church, 2 Rosebank Avenue, Kirkintilloch, G66 2PR.
