An MP has called for clarity over the future of a village post office.

For the past three years Milton of Campsie Post Office has been run by a temporary postmaster while postal chiefs look for a permanent replacement.

Now Kirkintilloch East MP Gregg McClymont has written to East Dunbartonshire MP Jo Swinson about the position – in her capacity as the coalition’s Post Office Minister.

Mr McClymont said: “The temporary sub postmaster does a tremendous job at the moment, but the staffing situation must be resolved to secure the future sustainability of the post office.

“I have called on Jo Swinson to use her ministerial power to urge Post Office bosses to step up their efforts to recruit a suitable candidate for this important role in the village’s community life.”

However, Ms Swinson said: “Thankfully the coalition Government recognises the Post Office as a much-loved, vital part of communities – unlike Labour who went on a closure rampage, with close to 5,000 Post Offices closing under their watch, five in East Dunbartonshire alone.

“The coalition Government’s commitment to keeping services open is why Milton of Campsie has had a service maintained even after the previous sub postmaster left.

“However, temporary post offices should be just that and Milton of Campsie offers a number of alternative locations for a branch.

“Post Office Ltd engage with MPs regularly and will be happy to meet with Mr McClymont to discuss the details of options for the future of Milton of Campsie Post Office.

“I look forward to receiving his letter and will reply promptly.”
