Cash boost of £10,000 for walkers

A FOOTPATH will receive a major revamp thanks to a dedicated walker who managed to secure £10,000 worth of funding for the work.

In 2010 Penny Sinclair single-handedly won ‘Walkers Are Welcome’ status for Kirkintilloch - an award which recognises walkers’ havens across Britain.

Since then she has busily been applying for a variety of grants to help promote the scheme and encourage walkers to visit the area - bringing much-needed money into the local economy.

Now Penny has been given £10,000 from the Big Lottery Fund for her latest project involving a well-used but under-maintained footpath.

The path, which will be widened, runs from the Forth and Clyde Canal, to the Park Burn and Westermains.

Penny, who also plans to plant trees along the route, said: “It’s really needed to improve the path for elderly people and parents with buggies.

“The £10,000 is a good start, although we’ll need more funding to finish the project.”

She added: “Work was supposed to start in June, but the contractor, who constructed the original path 20 years ago, has had to delay it until August.”
