Church members are looking forward to moving back into their building almost six months after it was left gutted by a fire.

A mattress was set alight outside Hillhead Church in Kirkintilloch in early May. Flames spread to the roof and the two flats above.

Luckily, the residents managed to get out of their homes to safety.

The church was left with more than £100,000 worth of damage to the roof kitchen, toilets, sessions room and vestibule.

They have been holding services in Hillhead Primary School and groups had to find alternative premises.

A special weekend is planned to celebrate the re-opening of Hillhead Church.

The Reverend Lily McKinnon said: “We are excited about getting back into the church and being once again a place for everyone, where all are welcomed and appreciated.”

On Friday, November 1, there will be a film night for P1-P7 children, from 6.30pm-8.30pm, and on the Saturday there will be a coffee afternoon from 1pm-3pm.

A celebration praise will take place at the church on Sunday, November 3, and will be re-dedicated by the Very Rev Bill Hewitt, former Moderator of the Church of Scotland.
