UNHAPPY customers have claimed back £240,000 thanks to a record number of successful investigations by Trading Standards officers.
East Dunbartonshire Council’s trading standards section dealt with 1,048 complaints from disgruntled consumers between April 2010 and March 2011.
The department enforces consumer protection legislation - taking criminal action when required and acting on behalf of customers looking for compensation from companies who have failed to act according to the law.
Councillor Amanda Stewart, convener of housing and community services, said: “In responding to more than 1,000 complaints from the consumers of East Dunbartonshire, our Trading Standards team is continually trying to promote consumer rights and ensure that businesses operate fairly. I’m delighted that record levels of redress have been obtained by this valuable council service during the last year. The team does a great job in fighting for the rights of local people”.
The investigations led to 240 of the complainants sharing compensation totalling £240,689 - with a growing number of grumbles concerning doorstep traders and online purchases.
The complaints covered a wide range of goods and services, including home improvements, furniture, floor coverings, electrical goods, food, drink, clothing, professional services, cars and holidays.
