Controversial school merger plans raise concern

Controversial plans to merge schools will rip the heart out of communities - that’s the fear from a community council.

A statutory consultation is being carried out into plans to close Auchinairn Primary, Woodhill Primary and Cleddens Learning and Childcare Centre and create a new school and childcare centre on the Woodhill site.

An ‘informal’ consultation is also been launched tomorrow (Wednesday) on prospective mergers across the district, including Meadowburn, Balmuildy and Wester Cleddens primary schools, in Bishopbriggs.

Members of Bishopbriggs Community have written to education chiefs with their fears about the Woodhill and Auchinairn merger.

Dominic Notarangelo, chairman of the community council, said: “By removing the school from either of these communities, it’s saying to that community that they don’t exist anymore.

“By taking away Auchinairn Primary, what other things are there in that community that will suffer?”

Meanwhile, Save Our School campaigners in Kirkintilloch have pledged to keep up their fight.

As part of the statutory consultation public meetings will be held at Lenzie Moss and Lenzie Primary tomorrow (Wednesday) at 7.30pm and at the same time at the Bishopbriggs schools on Monday, June 3.
