A new primary school is already £1million over budget - before construction even starts.

The new Lairdsland Primary School, which is to be built near Kirkintilloch’s Southbank Marina, was initially expected to cost around £5million.

But at a recent meeting of East Dunbartonshrie Council it was revealed that costs were set to soar by £1million.

In a report Thomas Glen, the council’s director of development and regeneration, explained: “This reflects three main costs: the purchase of land to the west of the site to facilitate improved access arrangements; the increased costs of offsite road and junction works to facilitate the new access and costs associated with the management of the overburden on the site.”

The purchase of the extra piece of land for access has already caused controversy, with SNP councillors raising concerns about toxins present in the soil - a hangover from the area’s varied industrial past.
