A BLAZE started by vandals at a car showroom has proved to be more costly than first thought.

Police had initially thought five cars had been damaged in the fire at the Toyota branch of Arnold Clark in Kirkintilloch Road in Bishopbriggs last month.

However, it has now emerged the fire, which was started in one car and then spread, had actually damaged six vehicles, causing around £27,000 worth of damage.

The alarm was raised after the showroom’s security guard noticed two men acting suspiciously in the forecourt.

Two men aged approximately 17-years-old and around 5ft 4ins to 5ft 5ins tall, wearing black jackets, were seen running away from the scene.

A spokesperson for Arnold Clark said: “The fire at our Toyota dealership in Bishopbriggs has caused more damage than we initially thought. We continue to work with the police to help with their investigation.”

Detective Sergeant Stevie Stewart said: “We have had a response to our appeal which we are following up but our enquiries are still ongoing.

“An additional car has been identified as being damaged in the fire and it is estimated the damage to it is £7000.”

DS Stewart said police were reviewing CCTV from a couple of commercial premises near the Arnold Clark showroom.

He added: “Anyone with information about the incident should contact myself at Kirkintilloch CID on 0141 532 4400 or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.”
