The 2018 Youth Olympic Games will not be held in Glasgow after the city lost its bid for the major sporting event.

The Games will be hosted in Buenos Aires in Argentina. Glasgow also faced competition from Medellin in Colombia.

Children from throughout North Glasgow gathered at the Glasgow Club in Springburn with Olympic gold medallist Katherine Grainger to be the first to hear the decision.

Katherine Grainger, who was involved in the bid for the Games, said: “This is a huge disappointment for Glasgow, which would have been the most amazing host city.

“We are very proud of all the work that went into the bid. But there will be other times and other things to go for.”

Sighthill was the preferred location for the athletes’ village if Glasgow’s bid was successful. However, it has always been the intention to go ahead with the £250million regeneration of the area, whether or not the city won the Games.
