Older and vulnerable people in East Dunbartonshire are being handed a lifeline to help them cut nuisance calls and feel safer in their homes.

Through its Trading Standards Team, the council was among the first in Scotland to trial some new technology called trueCall - to deal with the scourge of scam calls.

From January to May this year, 17 older or vulnerable people from across the area agreed to take part in the trial and have a small unit attached to their phone lines.

Its purpose was to block unwanted calls but keep the line open for family, friends and other trusted callers.

Such was the success of the trial that the trueCall technology is now being offered to all older and vulnerable people in East Dunbartonshire.

Council Leader Rhondda Geekie, said: “What shocked me was that more than a quarter of the calls they received were nuisance calls - three times the national average.

“I hope the technology changes the lives of our older and vulnerable people.”
