FORMER Strathkelvin and Bearsden MSP David Whitton claimed more than £34,000 in expenses in 2010/11 - the sixth highest amount at the Scottish Parliament.

Coatbridge and Chryston MSP Elaine Smith claimed £21,228 for the same period.

Mr Whitton lost his seat to the SNP’s Fiona McLeod in the Scottish Parliament elections back in May.

MSPs are allowed to claim expenses for a number of items, including travel, hotels, TV licences, childcare, stationery and postage.
