TOP roller derby skaters from across the UK will meet in Grangemouth next week for a special sporting event.
Central Scotland team Voodoo Roller Dollies has organised the charity roller derby extravaganza to raise money for Breast Cancer Care and Ballboys UK Testicular Cancer Charity and raise awareness of breast and testicular cancer.
The organisers say the bouts – which involve two teams of skaters trying to outscore each other on an oval flat track – will make for an exciting contest and thrilling fun for all the family.
The event’s organiser Marissa King-Harris, whose skating name is Raven, said: “The aim is not only raising money, but also raising awareness of these cancer among skaters and the public alike to get them checking with as much care and attention as they do their kit.
“My mum has been in remission for 15 years and Titan – my husband Peter of Stenhousemuir-based Hades’ Roller Boys – lost his mum 14 years ago.
“We had such a response that we’ve had to make it a double header with a mixed teams bout happening too.
“We have skaters coming from all over the UK and some very experienced players and announcers.”
The charity bout on November 10 will see skaters converge on Grangemouth Sports Complex as 14 boys line up against 14 girls.
There will also be a warm-up match – The InJustice League vs The Rebel Avengers – featuring members of girls’ teams from Central Scotland and beyond.
All proceeds will be split between the two charities.
