Orphans in Malawi were given some joy thanks to a kind-hearted family, friends and local football teams.

Derek Wood, his son Peter, grandson Ryan and Robert Glen, members of Woodhill Evangelical Church in Bishopbriggs, travelled to Malawi last month to help with the work of ECRAD - a Christian organisation set up to educate and provide basic needs for orphans with Aids.

As well as taking clothes and helping with ongoing work, the team were involved in running football events with the orphans and local villagers.

And East Dunbartonshire FC and Lenzie Youth Club generously donated kit for the youngsters.

Darren Trainer, a family friend of the Wood family, who se son Ben, plays for one of EDFC United’s teams, asked the club for help.

He said: “The purpose of the visit was to take out clothing and help with the ongoing work, including the repair of wells and other ongoing maintenance work.

“The boys were involved in running football events with the orphans and local villagers.

“EDFC were a huge support as almost 90 pairs of boots and strips were taken out for the kids to wear.

“ECRAD supports approximately 150 orphans up to the age of 15, and also supports the schooling of those over 15 years.”
