Trust your local newspaper – that’s the message from MP Jo Swinson, who has shown her support for the Kirkintilloch and Bishopbriggs Herald.

The East Dunbartonshire MP is backing Local Newspaper Week, which is organised by the Newspaper Society.

This year’s theme highlights the importance of local press freedom, and its role in scrutinising authority and holding the powerful to account.

Ms Swinson said: “I am proud to be supporting Local Newspaper Week. Local newspapers are more than twice as trusted as any other media channel.

“In our area the Bishopbriggs Herald and Kirkintilloch Herald hold local politicians and public services to account, and play a key role in informing local residents of the latest news and events.

“I encourage anyone who doesn’t already to start regularly buying a local paper to ensure that we continue to enjoy the fantastic local press we currently have for years to come.”

Jim Holland, editor, said: “The theme of this year’s Local Newspaper Week highlights an important role for papers such as the Herald – asking questions on behalf of our readers and scrutinising decision making.

“It’s a responsibility we take very seriously and one of our core values. A free press is one of the hallmarks of a democractic society.

“The Herald has represented the local area since its first issue in 1883 and we are proud to continue to do so – providing a wide range of news and features on issues which matter to our communities.”
