A GREAT-grandmother who celebrated her 107th birthday at the end of last year has sadly died.

Martha Donaldson passed away peacefully at the home she shared with her son Edward and his wife Agnes in Moodiesburn.

Reaching the grand age meant that Martha would have been one of the oldest women in Scotland.

Born in Airdrie on December 1, 1905, Martha had four sisters and a brother.

She was only 14-years-old when her parents died.

Martha’s eldest sister was studying to be a teacher and Martha had promised her mother that she wouldn’t split the family up, so she raised her sisters.

Martha worked as a seamstress and later married her husband William and moved to the East End of Glasgow. They had three children – William (80), Catherine (75) and Edward (72). They also had six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Martha received four telegrams from the Queen to mark her milestone birthdays. She died on February 2.

Edward said: “It’s very strange that my mum has gone. Everything revolved around her for the past 23 years she lived with us. We miss her.

“She was very independent and determined. In the last two years she deteriorated. In a way she knew we were there, but didn’t really know us.”
