A NEW Co-operative store is set to open later this year on the site of a former petrol station in Lenzie after plans were approved.

East Dunbartonshire Council’s planning board gave the green light for the the application to develop the former Gillespie’s garage site in Kirkintilloch Road last night (Tuesday).

Planning officials recommended the plans be approved. However, concerns have been raised over the proposals and 16 people submitted objections.

These include that the development will exacerbate existing parking and traffic problems in the area, particularly due to its proximity to Lenzie Primary School.

It was also felt that there is no need for a further retail unit in the area and that the development will adversely affect the existing local shops.

Another concern was that cars reversing from the spaces over the pavement will create a safety issue.
