An accounting student has been praised for exceptional performance at a prestigious financial services awards ceremony.
Nazia Akhtar, from Lennoxtown, won the honour from Glasgow’s International Financial Services District after completing a HND in accounting from the City of Glasgow College.
She was one of seven students to get the recognition and each of them were presented with a certificate and cash prize of £250 by Bailie Liz Cameron, Executive Member for Economic Development at Glasgow City Council.
She said: “Many congratulations to Nazia on her achievement.
“The IFSD Student Awards underline the breadth and depth of talent graduating from these universities and colleges which, we believe, is very reassuring for existing financial services companies in the city and prospective inward investors.”
Nazia, 32, spent many years caring full time for her terminally ill mother before attending college.
She is now looking forward to furthering her studies on a degree course at the University of Strathclyde this September.
All seven students were nominated as outstanding achievers for the awards programme, which was set up to highlight emerging talent who are ready to embark on a career in financial services, from across the city of Glasgow’s universities and colleges,
The International Financial Services District in Glasgow was launched in 2001 and was developed through a partnership of public and private sectors.
Scottish Enterprise and Glasgow City Council oversaw investment of over £1 billion to boost financial services in Glasgow.
This has so far been invested to transform the previously run down area of the city centre and has created over 15,000 jobs in the financial sector with some of the big names in finance, which were attracted to the city.
