IT will be week before campaigners find out if a community sports centre will be saved from the axe.

North Lanarkshire Council has agreed a series of cutbacks to save cash.

It is has reduced funding to North Lanarkshire Leisure (NLL) by £1.5m over three years.

Although that was less than the proposed £1.994m it is still a hefty sum and means savings will be necessary.

There were rumours that NLL bosses would meet this week to discuss cutbacks.

However, the Herald understands this is not the case and there not be a meeting for a “few weeks”.

Options include the closure of the Iain Nicolson Recreation Centre in Chryston – sparking fury in the local community, who have rallied valiantly to its defence.

See this week’s Herald for the full story.
