COUNCIL tenants in East Dunbartonshire who are living in homes that are now too big for them are being offered cash to move.

A grant of around £500 can be given to tenants who free up accommodation that is in demand for larger families, while they move to smaller accommodation.

Benefits of down-sizing include cheaper rent and reduced bills.

The Incentive to Move scheme offers:

nA smaller property in a location that the tenant will accept.

nA housing officer assisting with practical support for moving – organising and paying for removals, utilities, redirection of post and informing organisations of a change of address.

nPayment of small-scale refurbishment or decoration costs.

nPayment for each bedroom “released”.

Convener of housing and community services, Councillor Amanda Stewart, said the Incentive to Move scheme had been available to tenants for some time, but it was agreed to relaunch it.

She added: “Due to rises in the cost of living and changes to housing benefit it may be something people wish to consider.”
