Increased police vigilance over parking issues

POLICE officers across East Dunbartonshire have now taken full responsibility for parking issues in the area.

Until recently traffic wardens carried out this role and operated as part of the local community policing teams, working regularly in the town centres of Kirkintilloch, Lenzie and Bishopbriggs.

They could also be seen elsewhere in the area if required.

As part of the Strathclyde Police restructuring programme, the post of traffic warden in local authority areas no longer exists.

Police will continue the daily routines that were carried out by the traffic wardens.

Work is ongoing within East Dunbartonshire Council towards decriminalised parking enforcement legislation and when complete this will see a transferring of responsibility for enforcement of parking issues from Strathclyde Police to East Dunbartonshire Council.

Chief Inspector Brian McInulty said: “As part of our force restructuring process we no longer have traffic wardens working in this area.

“Their functions are now undertaken by operational police officers who will be working in the town centres, providing a high-visibility presence to detect parking offences and provide reassurance to local people and businesses.

“We will continue to enforce the relevant legislation whenever we see persons parking irresponsibly.”
