Is Kirkintilloch becoming the ‘Litter Capital of Scotland’?

Residents, business owners and council chiefs need to do more to stop litter clogging the streets - that’s the call from a fed-up resident.

Fiona Campbell says that there’s litter, a mattress and even a shopping trolley around the shops in Merkland Drive and Lammermoor Road in Kirkintilloch.

And she claims that, despite complaining to the council, nothing has been done to clear up the unsightly mess.

Fiona told the Herald: “At the back of Merkland shops there are three bins which are always overflowing and are never emptied, spilling garbage all over the area.

“There is also a discarded mattress dumped next to them.

“The stairs leading to the back of shops are covered in grime and litter.”

Grace Irvine, the council’s director of neighbourhood services, said that the matter had been addressed and would be monitored.

She added: “We will continue to monitor the situation. Arrangements are currently being made to clear the litter on the pathway next to Oxgang Primary and around the burn.”
