Young people from East Dunbartonshire are being offered the chance to get into the spirit of the Commonwealth Games with a series of free sport sessions.
East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture Trust’s Active Schools Team are running a series of Commonwealth programmes across East Dunbartonshire for children of all ages and want youngsters to come along and join in the fun at their new 2014 Commonwealth Club.
Funded by the Big Lottery Celebrate Fund and led by qualified coaches, they will provide five weeks of free activity in a number of sports for a variety of different age groups.
Places are still available on courses at Kirkintilloch High School and Lenzie Academy, which will run from Wednesday February 26 until March 26.
At Kirkintilloch High School qualified coaches from local clubs will put the children through their paces between 4.15pm-5.15pm.
Primary one pupils are being offered a fun five-week block of gymnastics, while kids in primary four and five will be able to take part in athletics. A girls only street dance class is also on offer for youngsters in primary six to second year high school pupils.
The courses at Lenzie Academy will run between 4pm and 5pm where primary one pupils can enjoy a five-week block of dance while kids in primary two will be given judo sessions.
Fiona Thom, Active Schools manager, said: “This a great opportunity to inspire children and young people to take up a new sport and to get excited about the Commonwealth Games coming to Glasgow this summer.”
Convener of development and regeneration, Councillor Alan Moir, said: “The council’s Legacy Group has been working hard in the run-up to the games to ensure the area benefits from the Games - now and in the future.
“The aim is to inspire our young people to get more active and find out more about the different sports on offer in the area - we may even discover a future Commonwealth Games star.”
To book a space on a course, contact the Active Schools team on 0141 777 3023 (Kirkintilloch) or 0141 7773137 (Lenzie) as you cannot just turn up on the night. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
