CAMPAIGNERS are urging residents to flip their off switches for a single hour this weekend.

World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) ‘Earth Hour’ takes place this Saturday, March 23.

At 8.30pm British time thousands of people across the world will turn their lights off to show their support for ecological issues.

Strathkelvin and Bearsden MSP Fiona McLeod (pictured) said: “WWF’s Earth Hour is a simple way for people to show their support for strong action on climate change.

“The Scottish Government is doing what it can within the powers of devolution to make Scotland a clean, green country, but we, as individuals, need to look at how we use electricity and how we can save both money and energy in our homes and businesses. Show your support on Saturday 23 by turning something electrical off for an hour.”

A WWF spokesperson said: “For 2013 as we all switch off our lights, we want the focus to be on the kind of energy we use.

“Because to create a better future for our planet we need to move away from dirty fossil fuels and onto clean green renewable energy which works with the awesome power of nature, not against it.”
