East Dunbartonshire’s first ever allotments have officially been opened.

River City actress Libby McArthur kindly volunteered to carry out the ‘breaking ground’ ceremony on Friday at the long-awaited Rosebank Allotments, in Kirkintilloch.

The scheme, a partnership between East Dunbartonshire Council and East Dunbartonshire Community Health Partnership (EDCHP), has proved very popular - with 63 applications received for the 20 publicly-available plots.

The remainder of the allotments will be used by EDCHP to help people suffering from mental health issues and those who are recovering from alcohol and drug dependency.

It is hoped that managing the plots will increase confidence and life skills, as well as providing the opportunity to get back into full-time education, training and employment.

Councillor Michael O’Donnell, the council’s convenor of social work, said: “There are 40 plots in total, half of which will be used to meet the needs of individuals referred to the service and support them on their road to recovery.

“I look forward to paying a visit in a few months time and being able to find out what everyone has grown!”
