MORE than 1,000 pupils in schools across Kirkintilloch and Lenzie will take part in an Olympic torch relay this week.

The event has been organised by the Active Schools team and the Active Schools captains at Lenzie Academy.

The journey will start at 9am this Friday (June 8), from Millersneuk Primary.

From there the torch will be carried to Lenzie Primary, Lenzie Moss Primary and Lairdsland Primary, before finishing with a closing ceremony at Lenzie Academy at 12.10pm.

Six pupils from Lenzie Academy will be torch bearers and pass the replica torch around each school.

Each school will welcome the torch and torch bearers with Olympic flags and banners and selected pupils will get to pass on the torch to their classmates and do a lap of their school.

Councillor Eric Gotts, East Dunbartonshire Council’s convener of education, said: “This will be a memorable experience for the young people taking part in this relay.

“The council’s Active Schools team work very hard with the young people in all of our schools and encourage them to keep fit and active.”

The event will add to the activities that are already on-going in schools in the lead up to the Olympics, which kick-off in London at the end of July.

The official Olympic Torch will pass through Bearsden this Saturday, June 9, on its way to London.
