A Kirkintilloch teenager is hoping to be crowned Miss Scotland after reaching the final 10 of the popular contest.

Laura Paterson (19) beat competition from more than 1,000 others to make it to the final.

The former Kirkintilloch High School pupil was encouraged to enter the contest after friends said she looked like the character Merida from the animated film, Brave, with her long curly red hair.

Laura, who works for the BBC on an education website, has been enjoying taking part in a number of fun challenges with the other finalists.

She said: “I didn’t think I’d get this far. When I found out I was overwhelmed. I couldn’t concentrate at work as we weren’t allowed to tell anyone until it was released in the paper.

“It would be a dream come true to win.”

The winner will be announced at the final on Wednesday, May 29, at the Old Fruit Market in Glasgow. The successful girl will win £10,000, a modelling contract, a personal trainer for a year and will take part in lots of charity work.
