Former Secretary of State for Scotland - Tom Johnston - will be remembered at a special event on the anniversary of his birthday.

The Tom Jonston lecture will be held in the Park Centre, Kerr Street, Kirkintilloch, on Saturday, November 2.

Guest speakers at the lecture include local historian Don Martin and journalist and broadcaster Lesley Riddoch, whose current book “Blossom” has just been published.

Lesley will talk about community activism, and former MSP for Strathkelvin and Bearsden, David Whitton, will give an insight into working with another Secretary of State for Scotland, Donald Dewar.

The event is being organised by the newly formed Kirkintilloch and District Development Trust.

Gordon Carmichael, chairperson of the Trust’s steering committee, said: “Tom Johnston was a great believer in the power of the community to do things for themselves. We felt it only fitting, as we get the Trust up and running, that we should mark his fantastic contribution to Scotland and to his own community here in Kirkintilloch.

“Ideally, we’d like this to be the first of what will become the annual Tom Johnston lecture and we’re delighted that Don Martin, a well-known local historian, will deliver the first one.”

The event will begin at 7.30pm with tickets available for a contribution of £5. The tickets are available from The Old Sweetie Shop, Cowgate and from Stewart Walker’s Newsagent, Townhead.
