UNEMPLOYMENT in East Dunbartonshire continues to fall, to the delight of MP Jo Swinson.

There were 887 claimants on Job Seekers Allowance in East Dunbartonshire in June, down by 136 from the same time last year.

Ms Swinson said: “This is the lowest unemployment has been since February 2009.

“Locally the latest figures are cause for optimism, though the picture is mixed when looking at Scotland as a whole where unemployment has increased slightly.

“It’s important that both levels of government put their efforts towards creating opportunities and getting people back into long-term employment.

“I believe that apprenticeships are a great way to get people back to work and last year my Get East Dunbartonshire Working initiative led to 109 opportunities – 77 of which turned into jobs.”

Meanwhile, the MP has welcomed a new Government report looking at alternatives to the UK’s nuclear deterrent programme.
