Library could close for major overhaul

A POPULAR town library could close for several months as part of a major overhaul.

Rumours began circulating that William Patrick Library in Kirkintilloch could shut for two months while builders carry out work to create a new community hub facility last week.

Library users have hit out at the plans claiming the move could result in the loss of vital library services.

One former council employee said the hub plans would reduce the library space to a 12th of its current size to make way for other council services.

One library user, who asked not to be named, said: “We had a library that was the envy of many and the pride of Kirkintilloch.

“Now it is to be decimated at the whim of those in power, without any prior public consultation.”

East Dunbartonshire Council told the Herald earlier this month the hub plans would have ‘no detrimental impact’ on existing library services.
