£1.75m Lenzie upgrade going ahead

DON'T panic - that's the message to parents worried about delays to the £1.75m Lenzie Academy revamp.

The project, announced earlier this year, is set to overhaul the school's interior and introduce a new social area for pupils.

It will also improve the kitchen and dining facilities, as well as the assembly hall, offices and corridors.

But councillors have been told that there is to be a delay in starting the work, leading some to worry about the funding situation.

Councillor Anne McNair said: "We understand that there may be issues with the council's budget constraints and that the funding for some capital projects needs to be carried over to the next financial year.

"I have been reassured that the funding will be carried over, but the problem is that if the project is delayed there could be a rise in the cost of materials and labour, which may lead to a shortfall.

"I am concerned about how this potential shortfall would be paid."

But council chiefs say the funding is in place and that the tendering process for the work was underway.

A council spokesperson said: "We would like to take this opportunity to reassure the community that the delay to the Lenzie Academy extension project does not impact on the money already put aside for it.

"Work has not started yet due to delays in the design process.

"The project has always been planned over two financial years - 2007/08 and 2008/09."
